Inevitablity?

Are Republicans true believers ... or are they just trying to talk themselves into believing?
“There are people who don’t like the idea of a being off a campaign or being on the bad list if the guy gets into the White House,” Mr. Keene said. “This is a town in which 90 percent of the people balance their access and income on the one hand versus their principles on the other.”

The article is interesting in that it only voices what the rest of us have been voicing since John McCain began doing his best immitation of the Phoenix. (wow, that's ironic, eh?). If there is a theme it's that many Republicans are now pragmatic, or fatalistic which is a shame. Win or lose, I always thought our strength was our core and the courage to stand by our convictions. That sadly is not the case. A man who has suffered tremendously and displayed tremendous courage, John McCain is many things, but conservative to the core is not one of them. Actually, I'm not sure what his political core is.

Charlie Daniels Autographed Violin Up For Bid

Last month I brought New York Post columnist Col. Ralph Peters on the show to talk about The Returning Heroes Home project. Well God bless Ralph. The series was outstanding and is a must read.

Not only was I moved but so was my friend and loyal listener, syndicated cartoonist Guy Gilchrist.  Guy contacted his friend Country Music Legend Charlie Daniels who in turn put this great package together for auction on eBay. It will last just 10 days.

The items are described on the eBay site include:
  • Charlie Daniel's autographed student violin,
  • Autographed "Charlie Daniels Live In Iraq" CD and DVD and poster
  • Autographed picture
  • Back stage passes to a Charlie Daniels' show in your area in 2008.

BIG NEWS!! Connie and Chris Hillman, Chris Hillman of The BYRDS, the Flying Burritos, etc, Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer, is so touched by this cause, they have pledged to this package to ADD an AUTOGRAPHED BYRDS BOXED SET to the winner. That's right. In addition to everything else in this package...you now get THE BYRDS Boxed Set, the new one....autographed by Chris! Bid high, folks....God Bless You.

The goal of the project is to build a brand new "Warrior and Family Support Center", currently located at Fort Sam Houston. The center makes a profound contribution to the rehabilitation of America's seriously wounded Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, National Guard Reservists and their loved ones. The new building will house returning wounded servicemen and women and their families during a very phyically and emotionally trying time.

Last year, the national party stripped Florida of its delegates as punishment for moving its primary ahead of Feb. 5 and the candidates pledged to bypass the state. Congress + Pork + Gore = (insert flushing sound here)

This is just too much ...

In November, the Democratic-led House spent about $89,000 on so-called carbon offsets. This purchase was supposed to cancel out greenhouse-gas emissions from House buildings -- including half of the U.S. Capitol -- by triggering an equal reduction in emissions elsewhere. Some of the money went to farmers in North Dakota, for tilling practices that keep carbon buried in the soil. But some farmers were already doing this, for other reasons, before the House paid a cent. Other funds went to Iowa, where a power plant had been temporarily rejiggered to burn more cleanly. But that test project had ended more than a year before the money arrived.

Not only did the Democrats pay for carbon offsets that offset nothing ... but they gave the money to one of their biggest political contributors. Somebody please ... stop it ... my side hurts .... bwahahahahahahhahahahah. No stop it really guys ... you're killin me.

"The Most Unbelievable Music Performance I have Ever Witnessed."

Last night in Atlanta I saw Cadillac Sky (Eddie's Attic). Even if I were not a fan I would be telling you this was the most amazing musical performance by a band I have ever seen. Ever. The audience, very few of whom knew who they were, were on their feet the entire performance ... a performance that lasted more than 3 hours ... no breaks.

The group is not "just" bluegrass ... in fact its hard to call it bluegrass. Last night they ventured into a number of different genres from Celtic folk to Jazz to modern classical, some of it reminding me of Bela Fleck. One piece in particular, written by Ross, teamed his violin with Bassist . An almost classical work, the harmonics were stunning. The rich slow base tones with a dissenent melody overlay by the violin. The harmonics were amazing. At one point I thought the base alone would bring down the speakers. Blue grass. No, I don't think so.

I was sitting next to three musicians, one being my brother, none of whom had heard them before. All said to me at one point during the night, "It is so rare to see musicians who take their music seriously."
I promise you, this group will be heard from.

Stimulus?

Does anyone really think $600 will stimulate anything? Its nonsense of course and runs the danger of being inflationary. Consumers are being squeezed by energy prices and frozen wages. I have blogged on this earlier. What happens after you have spent the $600? If your personal economy is still being squeezed 3months from now we are right back where we started, except the government is $150billion lighter.

The Feds need to address the underlying issues. An energy policy that increase supply, making the tax cuts permanent,, returning retirement and healthcare to the marketplace so it is no longer affected by federal price controls.

Somehow I missed this article. Really nails it ... but no surprise to my listeners.

Here's a bit:

At just 33 years old, James has already become noteworthy through her work as member of Hot Club of Cowtown. After seven years the band split in 2004 and James took to touring with Bob Dylan. Yeah-the Bob Dylan and it gets better; she had to pass up touring with Willie Nelson to accept Dylan's offer ...  James, an Austin, Texas native has found her calling which compares to the lounge sounds made popular by Norah Jones and Diana Krall but doesn't get bogged down by the calm soothing beats of the aforementioned jazz influenced singers ... If the Café 9 crowd is lucky, James will thrill listeners with the bubbly upbeat rhythm of Liza Jane, a square dance tune that will bring you right back to gym class-oh, for a good dosi-do.

Earning accolades along the way, James may be the next big thing and here's your chance to catch her show before the tickets cost you your whole pay check.

The Dwight Howard Award for "Guy who most needs a nickname"
We need to figure out this Brandon Jacobs thing. The nickname "Nigerian Nightmare" made Christian Okoye sound 10 times more terrifying, yet "Brandon Jacobs" sounds like someone who got expelled from boarding school for trying to steal the SAT. Even worse, you can't shorten his name ("B-Jake" doesn't work), and you definitely can't use his initials because, well, you know. So what do we do? The man clearly needs a nickname. Can we dust off "Night Train" for him? That has been dormant for a good 50 years since Dick Lane had it. Should we call him "The American Nightmare" as an homage to Okoye? At the very least, the Giants' Web site should have a nickname contest to figure this out.

Tensions Over Quotas ... But Not Who You Think

I say repeatedly ... whenever liberal politicians try to fix something ... invariably they create yet another situation that needs to be fixed. In plain English ... their social engineering eventually screws up. Welfare, public housing ... even the war on drugs. And now this.

Powerline links to this article, so read it first ... here's a snippet.

This battle over quotas for public-sector jobs is a glaring example of how immigration is turning the race-based policies of the last 40 years, originally designed to help blacks, against them. For African-American leaders like Claud Anderson, head of the Harvest Institute, the turnabout represents a betrayal of the civil rights movement: only blacks deserve quotas. “When did our government ever exclude immigrants or deny them their constitutional rights, as they did African-Americans?” he asks. But for other blacks, the demands of Latinos and Asians that government set-aside programs include them are further evidence that racial preferences were misguided in the first place. “Blacks who support skin color privileges now will be singing a different tune later once government starts discriminating against them once again, this time in favor of Hispanics,” writes columnist and blogger La Shawn Barber.

Black, white or hispanic, you need to read this and understand why social engineering in a free market eventually will hurt the very people it tries to help.

Rumble In SC

Please don't tell me the people don't like negative ads ... then again maybe it is just the negative "ads" they don't like. Whatever ... Bill's attacks on Obama are working.

Crime In Hartford

Great interview on Face the State on Sunday ... just got around to it ... with Chief Daryl Roberts. Part one ... if you're looking for trouble you'll find it ... can't say I disagree.

Part Two ... blame the media. I can't say I disagree here either, although Chief, murders tend to frighten people no matter why they are committed.

Super Bowl LVII

Eli is definitely the MANNNNNN(ing). Enough with the critics. Enough with the "He hasn't proved anything." Paxico, Toomer and yes Webster. Unreal. Congrats to the biggest Giants fan there is ... Sgt Mel.

And now ... it's Future Father-In-Law vs Future Son-In-Law in the first ever "In-Law" Bowl. But now it's a time to savor.
The GGGGGGGGGGG Men!

Great pictures of this game from AP at Yahoo! Check it out!

Let Them Eat Green Stamps

No real value to this other than its funny. On ABC's This Week George wants to know if the Dems will add an extra special something for people on unemployment. Of course you know the answer .. of course ... but the ending is great ... and not a bad idea. I'll use mine to get that swell George Foreman grill.

We Can Work Together!

I have mixed feelings on this but ... has Congress finally gotten the message? They are working together on this misguided stimulus package ... but they are working together and not even George Snuffle could get Charlie Rangel to lose the love.

The issue is: Will Democrats fight for rebates even for people who don't pay income taxes. W&M Chairman Rangel ... oh no you don't GS ... we love each other now.

BTW, if there is a stimulus package it should indeed include everyone and not just taxpayers. This is no damn rebate folks ... its a transfer payment. You are not getting back percentage of your payment. If you are trying to stimulate the economy (which it won't do) send out the damn checks to everyone. period.

Giuliani On Tax Cuts

He is non-committal on the the stimulus package which I am against. And he is right on the tax cuts. Business wants certainty.

NBC to Republicans: The King Is Dead.

Just had time to go over MTP this morning. Video below. First of half of show, the death of Ronald Reagan ... well so to speak. To sum up now: Republicans in chaos. Scroll down. Second half ... Democrats in the midst of a family quarrel. Still the Clinton stuff is well... priceless.

Clinton Slight of Hand Part 2?

Does it still take two hands o handle a whopper? Bill makes a claim on the campaign trail ... NBC calls him on it ... the Clintons say "We'll get back to you". This is just too much. Listen for Peggy Noonan's voice at the end ... "When, Monday?"

Clinton Slight of Hand Part One

This is a Video Daily Double. It's all about Senator Obama's comments that Reagan and the Republicans have long been the party of ideas.

The first video is the response from the "Rich Man Poor Man" candidate and Senator Clinton.
Then listen to Ms Goodwin and Tom Brokaw ... she is right of course ... and nice to see Tom mention Hillary's par for the course slight of hand. Enjoy. Best part of the show.

Just Mush The Issues

Doris Kearns Goodwin hearts McCain. A noble man who stood up against key conservative principles (tax cuts, immigration, free speech). Her suggestion ... run on your war record and mush the rest and hope no one notices. Listen to how Peggy Noonan responds at the end. Priceless!

BTW I like John McCain and to be fair ... he is calling for the tax cuts to made permanent and is not yet ready to back this short term big buck economic"stimulus" package which I am not sure will stimulate anything but inflation.

The King Is Dead?

Another one of those insufferable expert round tables on MTP. Topic: The Reagan Revolution is dead ... discuss among yourselves.

I actually like Jon Meacham, editor of Newsweek. But surely you can't believe that when Mitt Romney says "Washington is broken" he speaking of President Bush? Perhaps ... just a thought here, Governor Romney might be referring to the "absolutely do nothing" Democratic Congress with a 20% approval rating, which, by the way, happens to be lower than the President's. Ya think? Judge for yourself.

I will say this ... Meacham fit nicely into their theme today. "The Kind is dead ... long live the Queen!"

Elana James

Great week of music with Elana James. First Cafe Nine in New Haven. The owner is just a great host and really welcomed the Sound Off Audience. The place was packed. Elana appeared with Whit but Beau has moved on and was replaced by Elana's long time base player Jake who really kicked. She sang all her familiar standards and a few new ones.

Then last night at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington, MA. This place is a real treasure and clubs like this one are disappearing all across the country and we can't let that happen. Please make a point of catching some music there.
I have uploaded some pictures of the event ... and I took this video with my Sony still camera. Not great ... but then remember ... low light and it is primarily a still camera. Enjoy.
