Congressman You Are Wearing On My Nerves

This may be Neil Cavuto at his best ... trust me. Congressman Eliot Engel from New York tries to explain why a windfall profits tax is good for America. Neil Cavuto isn't buying. Everytime Neil asks him to define windfall, or to explain how it will lower prices, Engle screams "68 million acres". Neil just can't take it anymore and responds in kind ... "You're not answering the question Congressman", or "You're wearing on my nerves", or my personal favorite when Engel tries to blame "BIG OIL", ....  "Look at yourselves in the friggin mirror."

Going Through Withdrawal

Another great piece by Pete Hegseth......read full piece here

In fact, just one question entered my head when I finished reading: Why now? Why would Sen. Obama — or any legislator, for that matter — write such a piece before visiting the country for himself, seeing the situation with his own eyes, and speaking with commanders and troops who actually know what’s going on?

Some US soldiers in Iraq yearn to be in Afghan war

Bet you haven't seen any of this on the nightly news. The MASSIVE success in Iraq doesn't fit into their game plan. And that's sad. The turn around the last year in Iraq is remarkable. Too bad the MSM doesn't share that with the American people.

...That soldiers are looking elsewhere for a battle is a testament to how much Iraq has changed from a year ago, when violence was at its height. Now it's the lowest in four years, thanks to the U.S. troop surge, the turn by former Sunni insurgents against al-Qaida in Iraq, and Iraqi government crackdowns on Shiite militias.

Hill Democrats miffed at Obama

They're already starting to crumble.........I've been leaning towards the word arrogant lately when listening and reading about Senator Obama. Guess I'm not the only one..........Read full article here, it's a good read broken down point by point.

Privately, however, there is a different message coming from some Democratic quarters on the Hill and on K Street. Some Democratic leadership staffers complain that, having defeated the vaunted Clinton political machine in the primaries, the Obama campaign now feels a “sense of entitlement” that leads to “arrogance.”

"Which would you prefer ... we spend your money fast or slow?"

I suppose its progress ... at least in the empire state it will be a slow bleed.

The poll found 75 percent favor a circuit breaker, even it it means raising income taxes on those who earn more than $1 million annually. At the same time, 69 percent supported Gov. David Paterson's plan to cap property tax increases at 4 percent per year -- down from the 74 percent last month who said they agreed that a cap "is necessary to help those who have seen property tax bills increase by 7 percent per year over the last five years."

Talk about a Sophie's Choice. "Which would you prefer ... we spend your money fast or slow?" I think stop spending so much would be a better idea but then that's just me.

Asault On Christianity Continues

I am sure the mainstream media will be outraged over this too.

"University students Rachel Evans and Amber Pike, who challenged the legislation, said they and other protesters would now hand out condoms, stickers and leaflets to pilgrims. "Symbolic coat-hangers", designed to draw attention to the problem of backyard abortions, would also be distributed ... Evans said protesters wearing T-shirts with slogans such as "The Pope is Wrong – Put a Condom on" and "Pope go Homo" would picket a cross-city march due to be held on Saturday."

Kinda makes the Obama magazine cover look like child's play huh? Wonder if Rachel plans on doing this is at a fundamentalist Muslim conference?

In The Messiah's Words

Hugh Hewitt has discovered its powerful stuff ... the question is ... do the Republicans have the guts or will they leave it up to the rest of us. I vote the rest of us.

While many voters know that Obama used drugs as a young man, they haven’t heard the senator describe his drug use in those terms, or in his own voice. Nor have they heard him extensively quoting from the first sermon he heard from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., his longtime clergyman whom he renounced during the primary, saying, “The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago."

In one excerpt from the audio book that Hewitt played on his show in March, Obama alters his voice to mimic Wright’s and repeats passages from a sermon decrying a society “where white folks’ greed runs a world in need.” Later Obama says of Wright’s preaching, “I found the tears running down my cheeks.”

MSM Campaign To Elect The Messiah

Sometimes I sit behind the microphone in stunned disbelief at my former colleagues in the MSM. Let me say first that we all carry with us preferences and biases but in journalism (as opposed to what I and others do which is commentary) a reporter and editor are supposed to isolate them and at least attempt objectivity (as opposed to feigning it).

Today I urge you to read a series of posts at Powerline. It will stun and amaze I think even those of you who are pro Obama and consider yourself liberals. Now I admit you will likely smile but in my world, it's pretty shameful and I am stunned none of my former colleagues have not commented.

First is the mis-identification of our friend and SOCT guest Col Bud Day. When Col Day defended McCain against Gen Clarke's attack, CNN referred to him as a member of the swift boat coalition. Nothing more. Wrong and wrong.

Next a Washington Post article on the Messiah's religious values. Certainly there is much mention of his pastor of 20 years, correct? Ummmmm ..... nope!

Then there's Richard Holbrooke's review of a new book on the Cuban missile crisis. Holbrooke uses the opportunity to take a shot at President Bush while lauding the firm hand of John Kennedy. Any child of 12 who has paid attention in school knows that while Kennedy defused the the crisis with the threat of action, we got into the crisis via his weakness at the negotiating table. Well everyone except Holbrooke.

Finally... the NY Times takes a strange look at America's rising gasoline crisis and blames Congress for not increasing CAFE standards (each automaker must make cars that meet set MPG standards) ... yet oddly enough, no mention of drilling, and little historical perspective. My guess is the story had an agenda and this didn't fit.

These are new times ... bloggers like the three professionals at Powerline have good memories and access to enormous amounts of information. CNN, WP and NYT can no longer rewrite history to their liking.

Good work Scott, John and Paul.

Letter from Vets For Freedom to Wesley Clark

This is a great letter that along with the text, proceeds to address each of his "miscomments" with the facts. This is my personal favorite. Another home run hit by Pete Hegseth.

“I don’t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be President.”

FACT: If serving your country, volunteering for combat, resisting the enemy, and receiving seventeen decorations for service does count for anything, then why are you on television, speaking as an “expert” on national security matters?

Apparently the war is not lost, the surge is working and ... well, read on Democrats.

In the words of Majority Whip James Clyburn ... "Now that would be a problem for us ...". Indeed. Via Instapundit.

The White House sees the progress in a particularly positive light, declaring in a new assessment to Congress that Iraq's efforts on 15 of 18 benchmarks are "satisfactory"—almost twice of what it determined to be the case a year ago.

But of course ... the AP makes sure we know ... its not perfect ...

But for every small step forward, Iraq has several more giant steps to take before victory can be declared on any one issue. Amnesty requests are backlogged, and in question is whether the new law will speed the release of those in U.S. custody. It also remains unclear just how many former Baath members will be able to return to their jobs. And while Oct. 1 had been identified as an election day, Baghdad hasn't been able to agree on the rules, possibly delaying the event by several weeks.

Sounds a little like the current Democratic congress ... but then maybe that's just me.

The Obligatory McCain Temper Story ... Redux.

Oh good grief ... here we go again. McCain flashes his temper at the Sandinista's? And this is bad because... ?

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table, and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran said. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever. I don't know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don't know what had happened to provoke John, but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."

I like the part where Cochran is scared ... and McCain just doesn't give a crap. Might have something to do with "riding around in jet planes" ... and "being unconnected with war because you were taken off the battlefield". BUT this is one case where I agree with Glenn Reynolds ... McCain should have landed one.

Damn ... I like this guy more every day!

Shout To The Lord

(Picture from Hartford Courant)

On my way into work this morning I was listening to an amazingly inspirational and well know song "Shout To The Lord", on my IPOD. Then when I arrive I pick up the Hartford Courant and find this headline: "Poll Finds Many In State Unsure About God". Discouraging to say the least.
Then as I burrow into the article Elizabeth Hamilton writes:

"... Connecticut (along with Rhode Island) ... ranks near the bottom of most indicators of religious fervor, compared with the rest of the United States. When asked how many of us are "absolutely certain" we believe in God or a universal spirit, only 57 percent responded yes. Only the folks in New Hampshire and Vermont scored lower, at 54 percent.Even the residents of Alaska, who pray less than we do and go to church less frequently, according to Pew, are more sure of God than we are, it seems. "

In fact New England states are at the bottom. I guess I should not be surprised. Pastors chalked it up to Yankee stoicism. I defer to their knowledge of course but I think its more a case of God not ranking high on the list of things to do in my day. It is a well written article ... Elizabeth is a fine reporter. It's worth the read.

Other headlines include the Globe:Americans see truth in a rangeof faiths, massive study finds
and the NY Times: Survey Shows U.S. Religious Tolerance
and the WaPo:Most Americans Believe in Higher Power, Poll Finds

Guess it depends on your perspective.

Vandalizing Of Bristol Monument Decried

This is sad and disgusting but not surprising. The vandalized statue was a statue honoring deceased WWII veterans. While sometimes soldiers get warm reactions and appreciation, there's a entirely different side. A disappointing side. A side that makes you temporarily wonder why you risked your life for this great, and at times, ungrateful country. Here's a piece from the Courant article

Police are investigating the toppling of the life-size metal statue. The monument, a copy of the soldier on the town's Spanish-American War memorial dedicated in 1929 in Rockwell Park, was discovered Saturday morning bent on its stone pedestal, the legs shattered and other parts of the figure cracked.

"It looks like people rocked it back and forth to push it over," Swicklas said. "It's probably vandalism. Nothing was taken."

U.S. troop deaths in Iraq at wartime low

They gave a decent headline but of course only waited until the second paragraph to try to throw in something bad. But notice how they have to do it, they thrown in the part about Iraqi civilian deaths being at a 7 month high in April. What ever way they can find to make numbers seem bad. If you look at the stats, EVERYTHING is down overall. Please look at the stats for yourself here in graph form at understandingwar.org. This article continues to try to paint the doom and gloom. Understandingwar.org gives you an actually analysis of the FACTS on the ground.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nineteen U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq in May, the U.S. military said on Sunday, the lowest monthly death toll since U.S. forces invaded to topple Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The number of Iraqi civilians killed in the same month plunged to 505 after reaching a seven-month high of 968 in April, figures obtained by Reuters from Iraq's interior, defense and health ministries showed.

The U.S. military says violence in Iraq is at a four-year low following crackdowns by U.S. and Iraqi forces on Shi'ite militias in southern Basra and Baghdad and on al Qaeda in the northern city of Mosul, its last major urban stronghold. Continue reading

Obama To Wesleyan Grads: Forget The Cash

This is a common theme at graduations: a call to service. I heard it when I graduated. This difference is how Obama looks upon not just public service but also the private sector. Public, good ... private, selfish.

He goes further though as you will hear. He tells the Wesleyan grads, many of whom have seen their parents shell out better than $200,000 on their education, that they have an obligation, no a debt to society, that they must repay, by forgoing a job and working in public service.

Never mind the debt to their hard working parents who shelled out the cash so their children could go to a good school, and get a head start on a good job so that they might contribute in so many ways to their community. Perhaps by landing that Wall Street job, not only will they be able to support themselves and their children, but maybe their parents in their old age, make substantial charitable contributions to their community and provide jobs with their capital that otherwise might not materialize.

This banter is so 60's and so typical of a guy who hangs out with 60's radicals and radical professors. You owe society, not your parents. Public service good ... capitalism bad. Oh brother.

MEMORIAL DAY: A CONTRAST

John over at Powerline has a nice contrast on how two men view the world oh so differently.

President Bush spent the day honoring those who gave their lives in the line of service, protecting us and our freedom. The man who would be President spent the day bashing George Bush and portraying soldiers as victims.

The Democrat Times vs The White House

Yes ... it's a few days old ... but oh so worth noting again. The New York Times choosing Memorial Day to bash Bush ... Again Gateway Pundit has it all here.

President Bush opposes a new G.I. Bill of Rights. He worries that if the traditional path to college for service members since World War II is improved and expanded for the post-9/11 generation, too many people will take it.He is wrong, but at least he is consistent. Having saddled the military with a botched, unwinnable war, having squandered soldiers’ lives and failed them in so many ways ...

but this time Bush bashes back. I love it.

This editorial could not be farther from the truth about the President's record of leadership on this issue. In his January ... President Bush specifically called upon Congress to answer service members' request that they be able to transfer their GI Bill benefits to their spouses and children. In April, he sent a legislative package to the Hill that would expand access to childcare, create new authorities to appoint qualified spouses into civil service jobs, provide education opportunities and job training for military spouses, and allow our troops to transfer their unused education benefits to their spouses or children.

As an aside ... the Webb bill does none of this ... it does however offer the same college benefits to a service member no matter their length of service. A debatable point for sure ... one wonders why the Democrats and the NY Times fail to mention the White House points here.

MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - The al-Qaida terror group in Iraq appears to be at its weakest state since it gained an initial foothold in the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion five years ago, the acting commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East said Wednesday in an Associated Press interview.

"Frank Sinatra Day" vs. Funding the Troops

Here's Pete Hegseth's latest......if you weren't disgusted with our Congress enough already, here's another reason...........

Here we are, four days from Memorial Day weekend, and Congress still hasn’t passed a funding bill for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers and Marines are achieving undeniable progress on the ground in Iraq—and what does Congress do? It spends the final hours before Memorial Day recess passing this “critical” legislation:

* H.Res. 1147 - Congratulating the Northern Kentucky University Norse women's basketball team

* H.Con.Res. 305 - Recognizing the importance of bicycling in transportation and recreation

* H.Res. 1144 - Expressing support for designation of a "Frank Sinatra Day"

* H.Res. 1152 - Honoring Arnold Palmer for his distinguished career in the sport of golf and his commitment to excellence and sportsmanship

* H.Res. 1074 - Honoring the 60th anniversary of the commencement of the carving of the Crazy Horse Memorial

Obama's Lobbyist Advisers: Big Oil, Insurance Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies

Jim Geraghty has some great Sen Obama stuff, must read......click here and don't just stop after the first post!!! Here's a little piece

.........Okay. Fine. I think it's stupid to try to purge every campaign of anyone who has ever lobbied, since most campaign and political professionals need work in non-campaign years, and one of the most widespread options is lobbying firms.

But if our friends on the left want to have this fight, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

So can we expect a front page story
on:

Daniel Shapiro, one of Obama's foreign policy advisers on the Middle East, registered to lobby for several corporate clients in the last year, since leaving the office of Rep. Bill Nelson (D-Fla). Shapiro, who worked during the 1990s for President Bill Clinton's National Security Council, counts some of America's biggest corporate names among his clients, including beermaker Anheuser-Busch, carmaker Daimler Chrysler, the American Petroleum Institute and Freddie Mac.

Military Members Verbally Assaulted on the Metro

A good friend made me aware of this, sorry to say I'm not making this up..........an unclassified memo released by DoD

UNCLASSIFIED//FOUO//LES DAILY ANTI-TERRORISM/FORCE PROTECTION SUMMARY 20MAY08

(U//FOUO) Military Members Verbally Assaulted on the Metro, VA Category(s): Awareness (U//FOUO)

Recently, there have been local incidents in which military personnel have been verbally assaulted while commuting on the Metro. Uniformed members have been approached by individuals expressing themselves as anti-government, shouting anti-war sentiments, and usingracial slurs against minorities. In one instance, a member was followed onto the platform by an individual who continued to berate her as she exited the metro station. Thus far, these incidents have occurred in thevicinity of the Reagan National Airport and Eisenhower Ave metrostations on the yellow line, however, military members should bevigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times while in masstransit. Should you be approached by any individuals expressing anti-government/anti-war sentiments, or any other types of direct verbal assault, immediately notify your local police jurisdiction. If riding metro, exit the train at the next stop, distance yourself from the individual, and notify the Metro Transit Police Department. Here are a few friendly reminders of personal protective measures that can help youto stay safe: If possible, do not commute in uniform (military members.) Do not display DoD building passes, "hot cards", or personalidentification in open view outside of the workplace. Do not discuss specifics about your occupation to outside solicitors. Always try to remain in well lit, well populated train cars if traveling via metro. MDNG FPTAC Note: There have been only two reported incidents to theMetro Transit Police Department. Both appeared to be random in nature. As warm weather approaches, anti-US policy activists are more likely tobe active throughout the National Capital Region. This does not appearto be an organized campaign; however, personnel within the National Capital Region should be aware of proper AT/FP measures.

McCain makes age jokes on 'Saturday Night Live'

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!!! Senator McCain is a good sport and has a great sense of humor......

WASHINGTON - John McCain is 71 years old, and his age has provided late-night comics with some easy punch lines. On "Saturday Night Live," he joined in.

"I ask you, what should we be looking for in our next president?" McCain said. "Certainly, someone who is very, very, very old."

I'm torn between these two for my favorite.....

"Controlling government spending isn't just about Republicans or Democrats," he said. "It's about being able to look your children in the eye. Or in my case, my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren, the youngest of whom are nearing retirement."

"I have the courage, the wisdom, the experience and, most importantly, the oldness necessary," McCain said. "The oldness it takes to protect America, to honor her, love her and tell her about what cute things the cat did."

Pat Tillman's mother recalls journey for facts in new book

No matter how you slice it, Mary Tillman's a Gold Star Mom and she has my deepest sympathies for the loss of her son. Here's my problem though. First off, I read the article expecting that the proceeds of the book are going to some charitable organization for soldiers. I have yet to read that information and I watched most of the recent 60 Minutes special and did not hear anything about the proceeds there either. Now I would venture to guess that's what Pat Tillman would've wanted. Pat Tillman was a true Patriot. And I believe that what his family says about him being worried about what the Army/Gov't would do if something happened to him could be true. But that's not my problem. Nor is my problem what happened after the fact. I believe it was a combination of the chaos which is a part of war and some misguided people that thought they were doing the right thing. Still wondering what my problem is??? Mary Tillman has gone beyond getting the true story of what happened. And it very well could be the way she's coping with the loss of her son. But the soldiers that were involved in this incident are being riped to shreds. Not by Mary Tillman, but by themselves. Their buddies can tell them it wasn't their fault all they want, which it wasn't, but do you think they blame themselves??? We all know at this point that it was friendly fire that night and a tragic mistake. But she's going after where the shooters were, were they in the vehicle, were they out of the vehicle. What good is this doing anyone??? I think Pat Tillman loved his buddies and was loved by them. He knows it was a mistake and I'm sure does not blame them from where he's sitting and would not want them going through this. Those soldiers know what happened that night and will have to live with it the rest of their lives. Please Mary Tillman, let them be. War is not easy and not perfect. I know you're problem is with the government, more namely the Bush Administration and you don't agree with this war. I hope the soldiers on the ground that night understand that and that you're just a Mother grieving and it was not their fault.

Again, my deepest sympathies to the Tillman family, a great American was lost fighting for the freedom we enjoy today. That is not in dispute.

Understanding the Candidates for Dummys

A little humor, but also some truth.......one of those forwarding emails that I actual read and thought to share.......if you're having problems explaining the candidates to your friends, here's a great way......

John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barak Obama were walking down a street in Washington D.C. when they came upon a homeless person.

The Republican, John McCain, gave the homeless person his business card and told him to come to his office to apply for a job. He then took $20 out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person.

Hillary was very impressed, so when they came upon another homeless person, she decided to help. She walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. She then reached into John McCain's pocket and pulled out a $20.00 dollarbill. She kept $10.00 for her administrative fees and gave the homeless person $10.00.

When they came upon yet another homeless person, Barak Obama told the homeless person to 'have hope . . . change is coming . . .' and gave him nothing. I hope this helps you understand the differences between the Candidates.

The Strategy

It's becoming quickly apparent how the most (not all) of the media intends to cover the big and historic Obama vs. "What's his name again" campaign this fall. They will cover for the messiah at every opportunity, while seeking to nail "what's his name" as na ill tempered, near senile, cranky Nixonian version of "W" (Pardon me if that sems redundant to you liberals.)

First there's Newsweek's unreal comparison of Obama's campaign versus what it believe's McCain's camp must be like ... (via Hotair)

Obama wanted steady, calm, focused leadership; he wanted to keep out the grandstanders and make sure the quiet dissenters spoke up. A good formula for running a campaign—or a presidency.

Now here's Newsweek on McCain

It is a sure bet that the GOP will try to paint Obama as “the other”—as a haughty black intellectual who has Muslim roots (Obama is a Christian) and hangs around with America-haters.

McCain's camp shot back. Read it all here.

Evan Thomas and Richard Wolffe offered a biased implication that Republicans have won elections and will try to win this one simply by tearing down through disreputable means their opponents. You can see why many Republicans and voters and our campaign might take issue with that.

Want more (via hotair) ... How about this? There has not been much mention in the mainstream media about this. Either he's tired or perhaps he was just thinking of Theresa Heinz or maybe just Heinze. As Marc Ambinder writes ... if this were McCain.

In honor of this mistep Powerline points to this new map of Obamaworld where there are in fact 57 states.

But wait there's more. In a subtle piece of creative writing the New York Times helps the Obama campaign rewrite history. When McCain charges that Obama's willingness to meet unconditionally with Iran is dangerous and reason enough for Hamas to be gleeful at the thought of an Obama presidency, the Times reports Obama never claimed uncondtional talks ... except ... well he did. First read a detailed account from Powerline. Then you can watch the video here.

Throw in the jeans swooning press and the unbelievable picture on the cover of Time and you can see the trend. The Messiah is on the march. And the press just cannot let facts get in the way of the Messiah.

McCain Campaign Chair Schools Dems on Economics

Obama has been telling everyone he talks to that he will end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. But Former HP CEO and now McCain backer Carly Fiorina explains to George Stephanopolous that there are no such tax breaks. Companies choose to keep profits they earned overseas in those countries instead of bringing them home. Why? Do you really have to ask?

McCain on the other hand intends to lower corporate tax rates at home ... an incentive for companies to keep operations here. BTW Fiorina is generally credited with turning HP around and into a powerhouse in personal computers at a time when most folks considered the market lost to Japan.

The Five Mistakes Clinton Made

While these are all valid points in the article, I think they missed the overall picture. She lied, oh sorry - "misremembered" or "misspoke" and got caught. Many times. And politics is a dirty game, but come on, we all know the Clinton's take that to a whole new level. Bill was at least likable. A prominent conservative once said to me he was so happy they never got in the same room with President Clinton because Bill just had this spell he could seem to cast over everyone he met. McCain and Judges

The folks at Powerline have a great analysis of McCain's speech on judicial nominations. Close to the heart of Republicans and core voters in the south and midwest, I agree with Paul. This will play well.

Somehow, by Senator Obama's standard, even Judge Roberts didn't measure up. And neither did Justice Samuel Alito. Apparently, nobody quite fits the bill except for an elite group of activist judges, lawyers, and law professors who think they know wisdom when they see it -- and they see it only in each other.

Obama's camp has already fired back with a condemnation of Justice Roberts again. My guess is that won't play well.

Whatever happened to the Great Depression? Not the real one from 70 years ago, the lost decade of unimagined misery and Steinbeckian angst, the worst period in the history of modern capitalism. The one we were told was the inevitable counterpart to the greatest financial crisis since a couple of medieval Italians first sat down on a Florentine bench and invented the word “bank”
